BUTTERFLY – psyche

used and reused in every possible way, butterflies will never go out of fashion in the world of tattoos

but what is the TRUE meaning of the butterfly?

THE BUTTERFLY is a small bug linked to freedom
wrong
TOTALLY WRONG
I’d say that the butterfly has nothing to do with freedom

actually, it has a couple of different meanings, cool meanings….
let’s have a look ^_^

first of all, the great classic we all know,
THE METAMORPHOSIS

the symbolism of the butterfly speaks of transformation
a radical change starting from worm stage, then larva, and then, after a period of incubation, she becomes a wonderful butterfly with bright colors and the power of flight

like X-men

fuckin’ cool, isn’t it?

a change: from the slums to the stage
from rags to riches…

but the coolest and most unknown symbol of the butterfly is another

another meaning, that maybe a few of you know,
is that the butterfly is a symbol of desire:
about falling in love
about your first love
or about all the loves
about indulging to desire
and the fleetingness of that moment

do you remember those two guys….AMOR AND PSHYCHE?
Canova carved a wonderful statue about them , do you remember?
inspired from the tale told by Apuleius found in METAMORPHOSES

the tale tells about the countless plights that we all have to face every day, when the libido fights for the psyche object of desire

that could be a new pair of socks or Brad Pitt

PSYCHE in Greek means BUTTERFLY

representing since ancient times not only the mystery of the physical metamorphosis, but also the most enchanting soul transmutations

and the fragility and transience of butterflies bring us back precisely to the sparkling, fragile and brief burning desire, deeply self-destructive at times, but also full of promises and dreams

as the self-destructive attraction of moths to light
as how they magnetically attract pollen particles to them
as their sexy colors
as their impossibility of being taken, touched, reached, caught

that’s how the desire is

fleeting, temporary, self-destructive, enchanting, impalpable, unattainable

the third great meaning of the butterfly is: ANXIETY
hhihihihihihihihhi

her sparkling, rapid and incessant flapping of wings, her inconstant shadow and this continuous and perpetual movement… reminds us of anxiety, instability and the inconstancy of desire.

ephemeral desires that come and go and live just one day, or a little more, like the life of a butterfly

that spends an entire life as a worm and just one day as a butterfly

do you prefer a life as a sheep or a day as a lion?
we’re always here, with existential doubts

is it better to change and fight for our desires, albeit fleeting, short, intense, ephemeral and self-destructive?
or be silent?

with love, but always irriverent
